Are you using CWS? If so, you can identify insurances that require prior authorization for certain exams in the Appointment Type dictionary, on page 2. We have ours set to display a warning flag, and this prompts our schedulers to obtain an authorization number from the person scheduling the exam. You can also set them up so that the appointment cannot be booked without an auth number, and there is a text editor so that you can customize the wording of the warning/reject message.

I'm looking for a way to make sure this auth is obtained, and the number entered into the patient's account prior to the test being done. My OE specialist says an Order Rule won't work because it would not consider the patient's payer, but she's looking at developing a modifier-type CDS that will do almost the same thing.
