1. We are Magic 5.5 and use an alpha mnemonic - first three letters of last name and first two of first name.
2. I would think a numeric would be harder for users to identify and may contribute to choosing the wrong provider more often than not. 3. See #1 above - if we have two John L Smiths, first would be SMIJO and then we would use SMIJL for the second. The expanded lookup is helpful in these situations.
