In previous versions of Meditech, the Link feature seemed to serve no
purpose other than informational for the Pharmacists. It didn't do
anything on the paper MAR, and it didn't do anything on the Dispensing
Machine. So, in addition to meds ordered together, we used it to Link
range orders, such as Dilaudid 1 mg for moderate pain + Dilaudid 2 mg for
severe pain, and other combinations of the same drug, such as Seroquel 100
mg QAM + Seroquel 200 mg QHS. Our intention was (1) to assure anyone else
looking at the profile that we intended there to be two similar orders and
(2) to remind the Pharmacist that there were two similar orders when they
got new orders, such as to DC or change the dose (otherwise, they might
just stop at the first item as they scroll down).

However, in eMAR, the Link feature actually does something. If the Nurse
uses the Full Document routine on a Link'd med, the system prompts them
for the next Link'd med. Obviously, that is not what we intended with the
Range orders or doses at different times. So, as Bill suggested, we now
only use the Link feature for meds that are supposed to be given together,
and discontinued together.

RE: [MEDITECH-L] Question for PHA

If this is really a problem, perhaps you should look at why the orders are
being linked in the first place. Generally you link orders that are
supposed to be administered together, such as Demerol + Phenergan. When
the prescriber orders one to be discontinued, it implies the other is to
be discontinued as well. Hence the default response.

Even in Quick Batch, the confirmation message is "2 eligible Rx's
selected. Discontinue?". Of course, the default response is Yes, so they
can <Enter> through it without noticing that there are multiple linked
Rxs. But to answer your question... No, we've never used a Rule for this
situation.

[MEDITECH-L] Question for PHA

We are Magic, 5.4SR sr2.

Does anyone have a PHA rule that will flag during a Rx DC, when an Rx is
"Linked" to warn the user that they are discontinuing a linked order?
I know that you get somewhat of a pop-up when you are in mode individual.
However, our pharmacists process orders function defaults to mode quick
batch, and
they like it that way.

Thanks,
Sherlene Christen
