Kevin,
I added a barcode of the RX number to our med label and label.th
formats. We'll PL and use these to "tag" each individual dose of NF's.
This seems to be the least painful addition to our current NF practices
and gives the nurses something to scan. This will help keep the
Dictionary clean as well. Of course, this doesn't solve all the
problems (SCH and PRN for the same med having different RX numbers,
etc.)

Like all pharmacies I've been associated with, we do have a "NF policy"
that looks good on paper but is not enforced.

You are correct Alan that this is a work-around, but your only other
option is to add the NF item to your Formulary which in turns makes for
an extremely busy (read as: dangerous) Drug dictionary. Of course there
is the strict NF policy as noted earlier.

Alan Miller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Yes, but then you're
not scanning the med, you're scanning a workaround
and the system is fooled. What happens if the baggie gets something
else put into it by mistake? Each individual dose has to be barcoded
or
the system has holes in it.

Correct. For example, we would put the unit dose packaged doses for
that patient in a baggie and put a barcoded label on the baggie.

I understand that part, but where is the barcode printed so it can be
scanned at bedside? I assume the individual doses have to be tagged
with the Rx number, so this packaging is good only for the particular
patient.
thanks,

Alan, I think she means she uses the Rx number meditech generates when
the RPh enters the order...

Interesting, but where does the prescription number that you scan come
from? Is it part of the drug package?
thanks, Alan

At most of our facilities, we barcode it with the rx number from the
non-formulary order. We usually do not add it to the formulary.

Sorry, Cheryl,
I feel your Pharmacy's pain. How else will you be able to scan the
difference between one NFI and another unless they have distinct
mnemonics and barcodes? Unfortunately, Pharmacy ends up having to
bite
the bullet and doing the extra work necessary for this to happen. All
the more reason to have a stricter NF policy (pipe dream).

We are live on 5.5 SR3,have 5.61 in test and are anxiously awaiting
the
eMAR desktop. Working on dictionaries in preparation.

Current workflow: when patient is taking non formulary item, the
pharmacy does not add this to the drug dictionary. They have a
dictionary item called NFI. They zero the dose AND in dose
instructions
write the name of the drug, the dose (sometimes), pts own med (if
applicable), and *pt specific* so the nurse knows where to go in the
OmniCell..

I have had a consultant tell me that all non formulary items should be
added to the dictionary for eMAR to display correctly. My pharmacy
director is not in agreement.

Can anyone with eMAR give me guidance on this? Thanks in advance.
