We have the RT staff administer the respiratory meds and document them on the
paper MAR - we started this after the docs complained that they couldn't see
when RT meds were administered, particularly the PRN administrations. We are
readying the eMAR for implementation this fall. To facilitate this, we built
two new order types in PHA (RESP-BULK and RESP-REG) to allow the RTs access to
document respiratory med administrations only. It didn't take much effort to
set this up. We also built a print notification function through Meditech that
prints a notification of new RT medication orders to a printer in the
Cardiopulmonary office. Once the order files in PHA, the notification is
generated, whether the order comes from POM or PHA. The notification function
was time consuming to build, but it works well. No missed RT med
administrations.

We haven't had any problems with RT not documenting their meds on the Emar.

Long, long ago, when starting OE, we created an RT ROS order. When RT orders
are written, a HUC or Nurse enters a ROS order for RT with the details of the
order. RT has a screen where they enter their info and then print a NPR
worksheet. They document their treatments via an Intervention.

When we added the Emar, the only thing we did was to include RT in the Emar
training. They scan their meds before administering just as nursing does. They
use the Status board as well but currently see all meds. Pharmacy didn't want
to create a separate order type for RT meds.

We kept everything else the same as before.

What was your process before the Emar for notifying RT that they had meds? Or
did you have problems then as well?

What I've seen is that Pharmacy not only puts the meds on the eMAR, they enter
an RT order in OE which prints to the RT office. However, my experience has
been that even so, it can be difficult to get RTs to be compliant with
documenting their treatments in eMAR, or if they do, to get them to scan first.

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] Respiratory meds and BMV / eMAR

Just wondering how other places are handling this issue....we are C/S 5.5 sr 2
.

We are missing some respiratory med doses because here our respiratory staff
give the respiratory meds, but

frequently do not know who needs the med or when it is to be given.

We do use BMV and eMAR here but because these meds are given by Respiratory ,
the nursing staff does

not do anything with these meds including notifying Respiratory.

Respiratory does not have a way to see who in the building needs respiratory
meds, unless they look at every

patient eMAR .

The problem is when Pharmacy orders a handful of specific meds that respiratory
dept is responsible to

give the patient, we do not have a way in the system to notify respiratory that
the meds are due or ordered.

Does anyone else have this issue ? If so , how are you getting notified ?
