We are starting to use Meditech's BAR code.128. When the nurses scan the BAR code into Cerner Bridge Medical for medication dispensing, it keeps the first few formatting characters in the account number. In Meditech the BAR code works fine. Has anyone experienced this and knows a workaround? Shelagh Foley Mercy Health Center

There have been times I have been less than satisfied with Meditech and other vendors, but found that with direct communication and asking for additional assistance from vendor staff other than the primary contact, if necessary, usually gets issues resolved satisfactorily. No one is perfect and there will always be service issues from time to time, but when it counted JJWILD has stepped up to the plate for us. For an example, we had an unfortunate power outage due to a UPS failure during a routine generator test almost a year ago today. Teams from JJWILD and MEDITECH worked round the clock to get us recovered. It was ugly, and we had 36 hours of downtime, but neither JJWILD nor Meditech charged us a dime for their full staff of resources devoted to our disaster. They have come through for us over and over again. Just wanted you to get another perspective. We quickly realized that this was a huge mistake. As far as I know we were the only hospital in the area allowing this practice. Many times meds brought in were difficult to identify and required a huge amount of Pharmacy time to verify. Often patients would put all their meds in one bottle and even they didn't really know what they were for. The Med staff wanted to continue the practice in spite of the risks (they wanted to save the pts. money) but eventually all realized the practice is not safe. We had a huge campaign of advertisement in the paper and passing out handouts to all patients when we changed the policy. A number of meds were repriced to bring them in line with the cost the patient would pay if they were not in the hospital. I hope your admin fee is high enough to cover your costs incurred,..... I doubt it though. One of the computations that they would like to have NPR do is equal to Excel's LN function... Information from Excel states the following: Returns the natural logarithm of a number. Natural logarithms are based on the constant e (2.71828182845904). LN(number) Number is the positive real number for which you want the natural logarithm. Remark LN is the inverse of the EXP function. Has anyone ever pushed MEDITECH to do computations like this? Are they in the system via $T functions for apps like NUR, PHA or others to use? If so I'd be interested to know otherwise, I will need to inform the individuals that this is not possible.... Thanks in advance for any information you can offer.... We may have identified the true cause of the interface crash - the current process the Laboratory uses for quality control utilizes known patient blood cells (commercial control material has not yet been available). Apparently, the day the interface first crashed and we were getting communication errors on the ProVue, a tech had placed the original patient tube on the instrument (instead of transferring to a tube with a QC barcode) WITH THE SPECIMEN BARCODE IN A READABLE POSITION. This particular specimen had tests previously performed that were not the same as the quality control tests ordered. This resulted in a transmission of NRD (no results) for tests not performed with the qc tests, which crashed the interface. Since it was not a successful transmission, THIS SAME SPECIMEN's results are queued and resent at the beginning of each result transmission attempt, which kills the results interface every time. We will be working with Ortho today to try to remove that specimen's results from the queue, which should allow the interface to work again (fingers are crossed). If we have another error, we'll know to look for another instance of qc tests attached to a real patient specimen barcode. I thought this information might save someone else a great deal of frustration. Does anyone have anything like that now or do you have any suggestions for me? I know that I can build a CDS but I'm not sure how helpful that would be. One more question, can you jump from the Process Meds screen to Process Interventions using an attribute attached to a CDS. Thoughts... Thank you for any assistance that you may be able to give me with this. This year we upgraded from DG AViiON to Dell Intel servers and migrated to the OSAL platform in Magic. It was a massive project that involved also establishing a new SAN, Bridgehead backup, and disaster recovery site. Although JJ Wild was not the cheapest, we selected them for their knowledge, expertise and reputation to manage the migration for us. Not least was JJ Wild's close relationship with Meditech. We did not regret it. They stayed on task and on target, kept us informed, and had their people on site enough to complete the needed work. Our Meditech downtime was only a few hours on the one day that we cut over. What could have been a nightmare was - if not a walk in the park - at least painless. Douglas B. Dolph Voelker, Director Information Services Goshen General Hospital We are beginning to plan for a hardware upgrade for our Meditech Magic HIS and I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to share from experience what vendors/servers/storage you have had success with in running the Meditech magic system. We currently have the DG Aviion 1400 servers with EMC clarion disk storage. I would appreciate any and all responses. Recently we noticed that when edits are done to patient accounts from these areas, ADT crosses over the interface and resets the discharge date. As a result patients appear active in Pyxis that have not been in the hospital for days, weeks or even months. So far, the edits appear to be legitimate corrections from BAR and ABS. We are running C/S 5.5.2 with Pyxis RX3000. We'd appreciate any insight. Thanks Bob Robert Brennan RPh St Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island Department of Pharmacy 200 High Service Ave N.
