We also are going to pilot the C5 device. We have been 'told' that
availability will not be an issue. We will not by using the voice
recorder and we do not like the scanner on the device. We plan on
putting docking stations in the patient rooms with attached scanners.

reader

We've looked at the Motion C5 devices and plan to pilot them in one of
our facilities that currently operates BMV with COW devices. We're
hoping the C5's will be easier to handle as well as multi-functional
(they include a bar code reader, voice recorder, etc.). Our only
concern is availability of the devices given that they're very new and
apparently very popular. You might check with Motion Computing based in
Austin, Texas.

Subject: [CARING:11867] Re: tablet PCs with bar code reader

We are currently planning or Barcode Medication Administration
implementation. We have struggled with what type of computer device to
use. We did several simulation sessions having the users use
stationary devices in the rooms and laptops on wheels. The users found
that having the device in the room was easier since they did not have to
search for a laptop. Now we struggle with retrofitting stationary
computers in every patient room. We are interested in looking at
tablets. For those facilities that use tablets with scanners how many
docking stations do you use, are they convenient to the patient rooms or
centrally located. Any other feedback on the use of the tablets?

We opted not to go that route, because of the added bulk of the barcode
reader to the tablet, especially if it was wired. Staff would have more
"stuff" to carry into the pt room. We have carts with wired barcode
readers that staff is satisfied with.
Some of our physicians are trying the Motion tablet and the HP tablet
PC. No preferences so far, both are working as expected.

Is anyone using a tablet PC that has the bar code reader in it? If so
would you mind sharing the brand and model, as well as pros and cons?
Thanks, Renae
