There should be a couple of ways to do this (if I understood the question
correctly):
1) Rules can be used to force the specimen to a new specimen number.
2) With 5.5, an option became available to accomplish a similar function
(generating a separate label/tube), but the tests remained on the same specimen
number.

The container dictionary can be set up for either volume or counts. I think
most people use counts versus volumes because pediatric tubes will have a
smaller capacity than full sized tubes and I'm not sure how the system would
handle it unless the containers were defined with a pediatric volume. The
system won't combine (to my knowledge) if tests are set up across multiple
departments.

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] LAB worklist combining tests/specimens for the
leastamount of blood to be drawn

Hi, L'ers,

When a phleb prints the Worklist and there are several tests on an individual
specimen that have the same container, it gives the total number of tubes
required based on either the volume needed for the test or the count that is
defined in the Test dictionary. However, if a patient has several tests on
different specimens with the same container, is there a way that the same thing
can be accomplished? I've done a bit of testing and it seems that the tubes
will only combine for singles specimens, but not across all tests/specimens for
a particular patient. Please let me know if you've found a workaround for
this, or if this is really the way it works. Thanks!
