There should be a couple of ways to do this (if I understood the question correctly): 1) Rules can be used to force the specimen to a new specimen number. 2) With 5.5, an option became available to accomplish a similar function (generating a separate label/tube), but the tests remained on the same specimen number. The container dictionary can be set up for either volume or counts. I think most people use counts versus volumes because pediatric tubes will have a smaller capacity than full sized tubes and I'm not sure how the system would handle it unless the containers were defined with a pediatric volume. The system won't combine (to my knowledge) if tests are set up across multiple departments. Paul

However, if a patient has several tests on different specimens with the same container, is there a way that the same thing can be accomplished? I've done a bit of testing and it seems that the tubes will only combine for singles specimens, but not across all tests/specimens for a particular patient. Please let me know if you've found a workaround for this, or if this is really the way it works. Thanks! Rena H.
