Conferences are great places to meet people who might appreciate
hardware - but appreciating should be a prerequisite :) One model I
quite like is the Google model where there are a few people walking
around the conference with a few spare phones - and if they run into
someone who's passionate about Android, they'll offer them one. It has
limited scope, but great effect.

Yup, my preferred methods. Training sessions allows you the added
benefit of centralising shipping (as you point out).

Yes, please! This started with Google & the G1 around 3 years ago, then
Nokia & the N900 in Amsterdam (a nice surprise!), then the Nexus One at
the Collaboration Summit and again at OSCON last year, and then at the
MeeGo conference it felt like some people were turning up saying "so
what hardware do you think we'll get?"

A laptop or a phone shouldn't be the New T-shirt.
