Beams in a homogeneous material do not have a "constant width" in Maxwell's equations ... they will always spread out.
You can minimize this spread if you use e.g. a Gaussian profile of your beam (by specifying a Gaussian amplitude function, multiplied by a phase factor to specify your angle).
