When you have large number of processors, especially on a distributed  
system, you are much better off using HDF5 with --enable-parallel.   
For non-parallel HDF5, Meep has some hacks to simulate parallel I/O,  
but it depends somewhat on the filesystem semantics and tends to be  
problematic except on single shared-memory multi-core nodes.
