Yes, you shouldn't be using total-volume, you should be using modal- 
volume, as in:

        (meep-fields-modal-volume-in-box fields (meep-fields-total-volume  
fields))

meep-fields-total-volume returns a volume object specifying a region  
of space -- in this case, the total volume of the computational cell.   
meep-fields-modal-volume-in-box takes a region of space (a "box") and  
computes the "modal volume" (returning a number) as defined  
appropriate for the Purcell effect, i.e. the integral of the electric- 
field energy density divided by the maximum energy density in the box.
