This has been discussed before several times on the mailing list.

Basically, the source is just an antenna (i.e., a current source in  
Maxwell's equations).  It doesn't have a "direction" per se.  However,  
just as you can create a directional antenna by a phased array, you  
can create a directional source by setting the phase of the current  
appropriately.
