Hi,
I am not sure that I understand your idea correctly. One 2d model just
assumes that the z-direction is infinite and, thus,  the complicated 3d
EM fields can be decoupled into TE and TM modes. If you means that
the 2d sources are placed in one 3D model, my answer is that those 2d
sources only locate in the plane z=0.
