I am just trying to get into meep and ran a couple of test structures. I have a problem with just a plane wave propagating in free space. I am running 3d simulations. If I add a PML on each side of the computational space and introduce a plane wave source the light is not just propagating but gets somehow focused a couple of wavelength away from the source. The source is not extended into the PML. Is that a normal characteristic of FDTD simulations? Will this influence the results if I introduce a structured medium?

It sounds like the source is inside the PML.

Realize that, when you specify a PML layer, the PML layer goes *inside* the computational cell, adjacent to the boundaries. It does not increase the size of the computational cell to add a PML layer outside.
