For outputting the field at a single point, efficiency is usually not a concern.

However, as another alternative you could just do (to-appended "ez.h5" (in-volume (volume (center pt)) output-efield-z)) to create an HDF5 file containing Ez as a function of time at the given point. Note that the default size of a volume is (size 0 0 0), so the in- volume command here outputs the field only at a single point.
