No, I need to fix that. Nowadays (since we unified some of the code), it prints out messages like that whenever it initializes epsilon, regardless of whether it is doing subpixel averaging.

You could try replacing your Scheme function with something that does essentially nothing (e.g. just return 1) to see if it is the complexity of the Scheme function that is causing it to be slow.

(I am assuming you are using Meep 1.1 or later.)
