I'm pretty sure you'd have to excite your structure with an Hz source to see a 
surface effect.

Yes, 'convert ez-*.png efield.gif'.

The problem is this: the wave 'is going touch' the metal. So, I'd think there 
is a surface effect. And, I can't see this in the gif. What do you think about 
this?

Did you check the individual PNG files?
If they are OK, I wouldn't worry too much.

And what did you use to convert the PNG files to GIF? 'convert ez-*.png 
efield.gif'

Strange... in my gif, we can see some 'shots' after the cylinder. But in your 
gif, there isn't shots.

I'm using meep in Ubuntu 10.10, and meep is 1.1.1 version.

This field left of the cylinder... is it corret?

I can't reproduce the effect, I only see a field left of the cylinder.
Can you post a screenshot or the animated GIF? What version of MEEP are you 
using?
