Shourie, It sounds like you're trying to compile h5utils from source, which is unnecessary since Ubuntu has had prebuilt packages for h5utils since Dapper Drake (Ubuntu 6.06): http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/h5utils
If you insist on compiling h5utils from source, then it looks like you need to install the libhdf5-serial-dev package (or the appropriate equivalent if you're trying to use a parallelized version of HDF5), which contains the header files and other things needed to compile software using the HDF5 libraries.
