Is it possible to set the PML conductivity profile to be complex from the 'pml-profile' function? If so could someone indicate how one does this i.e. how do I declare a complex value?

Unfortunately, not. Only a real PML conductivity is currently supported. If you are trying to add a negative complex part to the PML conductivity to accelerate the decay of evanescent waves, note that this makes the propagating wave oscillate faster which exacerbates numerical reflections. For more details, see the discussion in section 6 of http://math.mit.edu/~stevenj/18.369/pml.pdf.
