I don't know what your use-case is, but if you find yourself wanting to share
just part of a git repo, you might want to break it into smaller modules.
You can use git-submodule or a script to pull them together.
It is possible to preserve the history, if you want to do that.

I tend to publish all my rubbish, and only keep stuff private
if it really needs to be private (passwords, contacts, contract work).

None of my own source code needs to be private,
although some of it might be embarassingly bad!
