I'd not noticed that meetup does this; and now am slightly upset about it.
But the link you posted is 3 years old, so it doesn't seem likely to change.

Note that gmail at least happily removes what appears to be an arbitrary
number of dots in email identifiers. So then I guess you could assign a
certain number of dots to meetup.com, and identify emails from them in that
way :)
