I don't know it needs to be adjustable, but at the moment it's just painted yellow with 50% alpha or something. I agree that we could certainly do something better than that. I'm sure there are plenty of people like yourself who value the syntax highlighting, but others (including myself) find it distracting to have syntax highlighting and change highlighting at once... there's just too much visual noise.
