I do have a gray area in the gutter between the two panes (which I
really like).  I'll have to check to see if there's an extra blank
white column.  I agree with john: I really like to being able to tell
where the edges of a text area are.  Having things appear to be
"artifically indented" by an extra column would be a bit confusing at
times.

I guess I've been using emacs for too many decades. It's tough getting
old. :)
