The principle that Meld's version control view shows you what your version 
control shows on the command line is good. However considering subversion 
(which I know best) it does categorise non-version controlled files into 2 
categories, unversioned and ignored (and recent contact with git suggests to me 
it might do the same). Rather than using melds filtering a better option may be 
displaying files according to these 2 statuses which would continue the 
principle of showing what the version control shows while allowing viewing of 
unversioned files. Other graphical version control display programs often allow 
the option to show or not show files in either of these 2 statuses.

I am not sure how easy a job it would be to get these 2 statuses across all the 
version control systems meld supports but it seems to me that this would best 
maintain the original principle.
