Attached are the results of my survey on the use of an "alias" for Internet addresses.
Following a lot of discussion (and aided by the survey results), the City of San Luis
Obispo recently adopted "slocity.org" as an alias in addition to our formal domain
name of "ci.san-luis-obispo.ca.us." This means you get to our web site or send us
email using either address. (Note: registering an alias is pretty simple.)
Briefly, I received 25 replies. Of these, 15 used a standard "domain-naming"
convention of:
ci.city-name.ca.us
(The CSMFO directory indicates that at least 94 cities use this convention).
Of these 15, six (including us now) use an alias. From the responses, the reasons are
pretty much the same — it's more user friendly. Most folks are used to ".com" or
".org" addresses. The "ci.ca.us" stuff seems to throw people. And the standard City
naming convention can be awkward with a name like "San Luis Obispo" (which no one
knows how to spell anyway).
Anyway, thanx y'all for your replies.
