Mr. Williams and Group Members,

in response to Mr. Williams' question, our firm is the developer of software for Building Departments.  We work closely with Building Officials and understand and respect their professionalism and their rigorous certification processes.

I would like to direct your question to Mark Matthews, the Chief Building Official at our client site, the City of Millbrae.  He is very much involved in a San Francisco area Chapter of Building Officals and regularly attends meetings and conferences related building codes.

Additionally, there are three main organizations that oversee building codes and certification of Inspectors and Building Officials.  The International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), http://www.icbo.org is the one that most, if not all, California Building Officials maintain membership in.

Furthermore, each state has its own chapter that helps develop and proctor the codes specific to a given state.  The California Building Official's website is http://www.calbo.org/

I hope that I have been of some help. Good luck.

I know this is not in our area of expertise, but I thought this would be the quickest way to get some direction.  Our current Building Official is retiring soon.  She has never had any type of certification.  We have been told that the Building Official should be certified. My question is, where do I find what the requirements are to be a Building Official.  Any help is greatly appreciated. Michael Williams
