As everyone knows the speed of the criminal judicial system can move
at a snails pace. This means that Public Safety officers may be
subpoena for testimony after their retirement.

Question: Our Police Chief has asked whether other agencies provide
any form of compensation to officers called to testify after retirement.

It is my understanding that if the officer changed agencies and is
working for a different police agency, the common practice is to allow
the officer paid time to testify at the case originating from their previous
employer. However, the question is directed to situations involving
retirees or those no longer working for a Police Agency.

Do you pay them?

If yes, what do you base the pay on ? (Flat scheduled rate? The class &
step at termination?)

If yes, are you making payments through your payroll system?

Thanks in advance for your responses. I will post responses received
by September 20, 2000.
