Get the piston on TDC compression stroke and lever the valve retainer down
using a radius rod or similar shaped tool with a hollow cut out on the cam
between the cam lobes. Set up a dial indicator on the back of the retainer
and lever the valve down till it touches the piston. Normally with stocky
springs the valve springs compress pretty easily. (seat loads are typically
55-65 lbs seat pressure), competition springs can be a bit harder with
approx 120 lbs seat loads.
