Chris,
My first impressions on this problem was "Not sure on this one and need more
info". What breed of alternator & reg was on it and what did you replace it
with. Was there a shower of sparks at any time. I'm not sure what your answers
will tell me, but we gotta start somewhere.
After having a bit if a think about this I'll give you one or two possibilities.
At a rough guess from what you have told us and if the regulator is an external
type is that it has pooped itself (open circuit) on one side (pilot lamp relay)
and although it sounds like the charge (field) circuit is activating you
will/could be getting max charge which is not friendly to the battery. Try a
different reg.
Internal reg? I'd be looking at the brushes & slip ring to see if there clean
and not full of crap as arcing can cause the light to glow but not really full
on. Don't ever clean the guts of an alternator with a solvent as it kills the
windings stone dead, use compressed air or an old tooth brush etc.
terry (have we noticed the cooler weather is showing up the tired electrics
lately)
