The new steering box should cost about $40. A recoed box will cost about $190, and
they will do yours. Boxes don't wear out much so I went with a second hand one.
I would go for the 120Y box as they are around 1980's and are the lowest km boxes you
are likely to find. The 180B boxes should fit, but after that they changed
stuff so none will fit. If I were you, I would adjust you box to see if it makes a
difference. You should have a bolt coming out of the steering box towards the
bonnet. It has a slot, for a flat tipped screwdriver, in the top and a locking nut
around it. Just loosen the nut while holding the bolt and screw it in a little
at a time. Check the play in the steering wheel while you are doing this. It should
get less and less the further you screw it in. If you screw it in too far the
steering will get very heavy and won't centre itself when driving, you will notice
this on the first drive. If you adjust it as far as you can go and it makes no
difference, like mine, you need to replace it.
The hardest bit about installing a steering new box is to remove the pitman arm from
the old box, and the 120Y box, you can't use the 120Y pitman arm. You can't buy
pitman arm pullers that are small enough so I took it to a mechanics to pull off.
Make sure you put the pitman arm on when the wheels and the box are centred, i.e.
after you have the box bolted in and centred, otherwise you will have 1/2 turn right
and 3 turns left. You will notice the quicker steering with the 120Y box. If
you don't like quick steering don't get a 120Y box, find another.
