Terry,I've
now heard this from many people about turbocharged engines - they like
to be loaded up with a tallish diff. Provided it doesn't bog off the line
(big turbo) a higher diff seems to work well. My 3.7 seems about right.
I really thought it would be too high, but it is fine. Minimises wheelspin
too.
Pete,
That is what
you want for sure, i've just dropped from a 3.7 a 3.9 on L car and as it
only has 150hp it made a substantial difference both in driveabiliy &
performance. This sort of change does seem to work in reverse for the turbos,
time will tell with mine and I'm inclined to leave to 3.9 in for
a while after i get the FJ in and hope it works OK.
A
friend was running a similar car to mine (SRT in 1600) on the same night
with the same tyres and he was complaining bitterly of traction problems
- he was running a 4.4 LSD. Mine was hooking up nicely with the 3.7....It
really depends a lot on your overall combination too - a heap of hot parts
doesn't necessarily add up to a fast car! Sometimes it takes a bit of persuasion
to get it all working in harmony.
Absolutely true
and it usually costs you a lot of $ these days to find this out, hopefully
young ppl on the list will tap in so some of us that have been around for
a while can keep the advice coming for them, but in the end it is your
own decisions that you have to live with.

Anthony,
With 14 psi you should be able to get in the mid to low 13's but you
will need to develop a technique that works for you to get a 510 off the
line. An FJ with a T03 and a relatively average size ic Cordia, Supra etc.
will run 14 psi quite happily. I'm not saying don't fit the monster but
it's and urban myth that a huge ic will improve your times or anything
else other than collect rocks without other modifications to take advantage
of the lower charge temps. I'd recommend a decent BOV (Blitz or Bosch RB)
with the T03 as well, they don't only sound good but do serve to reduce
lag, and an FJ can have a bag full of that if it's not setup right. Water
injection is also a very worthwhile modification to get some more go. Another
small thing with the FJt is the diff ratio, i found that a lot of ppl think
first off that a very low diff like a 5:1 is the way to go just like a
NA engine, I found a low diff just about useless with this engine, as it
loves to push gearing as well as rev. Somewhere in the range of 3.7 to
4.1 is about right although i always wanted to shove a 3.54 in just to
satisfy my idle curiosity, my best recorded time with the stock ECU was
with a 3.7 cig (13.3 at Castlereagh, yeah i'm a sob). Maybe next time round
i'll get around to trying it out with a steep diff but it will be in a
very different 510 who knows what will be best as my '70 510 is a
lot heavier.
2c worth and have fun
