Michael,

I have restored 2 Datto's to date, My sons' we bead
blasted back to bare metal ( thats bead... NOT
sand!!). Mine I paint stripped back to bare meatal.

>From experience get it bead blasted it is cleaner,
faster and you really get back to bare metal to really
determine the extent of any rust and it creates a
perfect base to paint. One thing we noticed is that it
does not rust after bead blasting, so you can take
your time getting it ready for paint.

I don't know how skilled you are but you can change
the running gear yourself, it really is very easy to
do in a datto. Hire a block and tackle and go for it
!!!
