Just a short rundown on yesterday's antics -

The Adelaide 1600 Club hired the mitsu test track at Tailem Bend ( 100k out
of Adelaide ) and commandeered the services of Tony Hastings and friends. It
turned out to be pretty much the first day of the advanced driver training course
they run for various groups from the 'celebrity' drivers at GPs to corporations
wanting less 'incidents' in their company cars.

First up, a bit of a talk - tyres, driving, accidents, etc., but all done in
a humorous and non-preaching way, then out to the tarmac for some braking and
avoidance exercises.
Later on some 'oversteer' work, with a 50m circle, half of it wet - idea was
to hang it out sideways for half the circle, then a bit of a slalom for the
dry half. Now, those who think 1600s don't need rear swaybars - EVERY 1600 bar
one was a pig understeerer until the driver used the throttle to unsettle the
rear. The exception was fitted with a rear swaybar - QED.
Having unsettled the rear, circlework prevailed for many leaving our learned
instructor shaking his head ( but trying to hide the grin, I'm sure ).
Next, a slalom - 10 witches' hats at 20m intervals, start and finish in an 8m
zone. Still can't get the cheeks to drop thinking about the slalom, it was a
total blast - 'nuff said.
After all the serious stuff was out of the way ( yeah, I know, burnouts and
circlework aren't exactly serious ) there was still time for some drag racing
( full 1/4 mi ) for those with gas and rubber left to burn.
Some carnage was wreaked - 1 locker diff uh..locked, a wagon lost a rear spring
hanger and a witches' hat found its way into a radiator, but no panel damage
apart from smacking into the hats and markers.

Anyway, if someone offers you this for $35 ( full day, 10am 'til dusk ) - don't
think twice, I had a freakin' ball - and I didn't even get into the circlework
( much ). The only downer was that we had room for 45 1600s and had to settle
for 22 - can't believe anyone would have passed up that opportunity to have
a legal fang and learn some useful driving technique along the way - way cool.

Hopefully will have some piccys soon.

Seeya,
DF
