IMHO Hitachi are up there with the best, very reliable electrics but the early
alternators put out a massive 22 amps, Lucas 15 AC was 28 amps and the 180B
Lucas was 35 amps normally didn't last long with decent lights fitted. The Bosch
alternators start at 40 amps, 55 amp was popular in dattos from 75 or so. My
road going headlights draw ~30 amps and the Oscars are about the same and the
same Bosch has driven them since 1978 with only a reg/brush change or three and
about 4 batteries in the same time and it's very cold in winter here. A good
battery is essential for a reliable electrical system, especially in a stiffly
sprung 510, vibration destroys a battery and when earth leakage sets in the
alternator takes a beating. I'm using an Optima (non vent reqd for boot
application) and time will tell how good they are.
