I had a very similar problem with my DGAV carb - kept dropping out from idle.
Turned out there's a secondary pump mechanism on the side away from the engine
toward the front of the carb. This is vacuum operated, and the diaphragm had
split allowing fuel to basically gravity feed into the plenum. Blocked it off,
forgot about it, and now I get 6 to 7 litres/100km :)
