Andrew,
I make my living buying and selling Nissan competition parts & have had the
same experience as you, even when dealing from "professional" persons. In
one case I bought & sold a gearbox that had been "rebuilt by an expert".
The box was not up to the expectations of the person who purchased it as a
rebuilt box. Since then I will usually offer to open the (engine, gearbox,
etc) to ensure that both parties agree on the condition of components
before purchase. I think if you are putting out that sort of money, a
gasket set, even X-raying and labour to pull down the item and reassemble
is chicken shit in the total cost of the parts.
Cheers
Feral Errol.
