I had to replace the rear main seal on my old L18 (in my 1600). Did it in
the car. Bit of work but I fixed it O.K. Remove gearbox, clutch, flywheel.
Depending how lucky you are, you might be able to pull the seal out. I
could n't get into it, so I had to drop the sump, loosen the bearing cap,
then pulled the seal out. Put new seal on, torque up bearing cap, put sump
back on, then flywheel, clutch, gearbox etc. Good as new. All that work for
a eight buck seal.
