Mark's description of his experience reaffirms my belief that pulling the
engine out is the easiest way to do the rear seal. Think about "dropping the
sump" with the engine still installed!
After you have done an "engine out" two or three times you can get it down
to under 1 hour removal and less to reinstall it, as you already have all
the right tools out.
Luke and I did an engine swap on his 1600 in less than three hours drive in,
drive out, on one Christmas eve. This included switching from an EFI engine
to a carby L18.
I keep a spare fully assembled engine ready to swap into either of my kids
cars overnight, to keep them on the road. You can then rebuild the dud
motor at your leisure.
Unfortunately my 2 kids drive totally different cars and it means 2 spare
engines rather than one. (The other one is a Mazda and I cant believe how
stuffed they get, compared to a similar Kms. L series engine)
