Richard,
I disagree, I reckon it is the 510 Stanza that was marketed in the US. The
Japanese Violet (160J or Violet) you refer to that won the East Africa was
the 710. Have a closer look at the ducktail on the boot and the energy
bumpers, it's not a 710. Nissan US did something weird calling a Stanza a
510.

This car isn't a 510 or a Stanza, its a Violet or 610. A cross between an
early 120Y (Sunny ) and a 180B. Used in the late 70's to win the East
Africa Safari. At least 2 of them came to Oz. with the twin cam L20Z? four
valve, quad throttle, FI, engine pumping out 260BHP, naturally aspirated.
They also had huge 4 wheel ventilated discs. The folk lore in the opposition
teams was they were faster as drivers didn't have to lift off the
accelerator into corners, they simply jumped on the brake pedal then lifted
off again.
And they kicked arse, especially Fords "works" four valve (BDA) Escorts.
I've never heard a better engine at 8 grand at 2.00am in the forests around
Bright.
