I have never taken the heads off of an L16 either....but took the heads off a 2.6L OHC mitsui engine...i found that there was a bolt on the actual cam and once that was undone you could slip the sprocket or whathave you straight off and the head then came straight off....also i had to put a shifter on the crankshaft whilst undoing the bolt on the cam so that the engine wouldn't just turn over when trying to undo the bolt...hope that is of some help

I can't find a link in the chain that is removable so is there some trick to it I just don't know
I've only ever taken the heads off pushrod engines and this OHC shit has got me buggered
