You wont lose anything by trying the repair option first. The engine will
either run, or not run. If it starts pinging turn it off and retard the
distributor. The vacuum unit is basically a diaphragm connected to a shaft
which pulls the
points around the distributor drive, when the diaphragm is pulled by vacuum
in the chamber.
