I was told the same thing when I had dual webers. The only thing I could think of
would be the fact the the lead in petrol helps lubricate parts and that with unleaded
the carbs might not be as smooth in operation. I ran unleaded no problems, with
intermittent use of leaded.
Thinking about it, all a carby does it mixes air and fuel. As long as the engine is
capable and tuned, the fuel can be whatever. Webers and SU don't differ in their
function, just how they do it.
Call me a cynic, but SU's tend to be serviced by "trained" mechanics where as webers
can serviced by a greater range of mechanics. Perhaps a vested interest on behalf of
the mechanic.
