Michael,
I have been going through this all year. Big summary of what I have found.
1600 fuel lines and mechanical pump are not up to performance L series
applications. Particularly in constant WOT situations of a long duration.
Big broad ballsy statement I know.
I have found in worsening order su's, single 45mm webber and twin 45mm
webber in the above mention application to all have fuel supply problems,
particularly in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. What tends to happen is you run the
fuel bowl dry faster than the pump can fill it.
Summay for carb type.
su: would run out in 4th an fifth on the straight at sandown with std fuel
lines mech pump, STD L18 and extracters.
single 45 webber would run out of fuel at around 4500-5000rpm in 3,4,5th
gear at Phillip island . Again std fuel lines, mech pump, STD L18,
extracters. Note this did not show up in testing on the street, only on the
track.
single 45 webber would run out of fuel at around 5000-5500rpm in 3,4,5th
gear at Sandown. Again std fuel lines, facet electric fuel pump, STD L20B,
extracters.
Twin 45 webbers at calder, 3/8 fuel line from the tank (run underneath the
car), new electric fuel pump, STD L20B, extracters. Problem fixed.
Now at winton short track Twin 45 webbers, 3/8 fuel line from the tank, new
electric fuel pump, STD L20B, 76 deg Cam, extracters. No fuel probs but
didn't get to use 4,5th gear to really test the car.
Other suggestions make sure fuel tank has a vent system hooked up so tank
isn't under vaccum as you pump out the fuel.
Test fuel system using a 1 litre container and disconnect fuel line at carb,
turn pump on and dispense fuel into container. If you can pump around 1
litre a min you should be ok. You can also do this before and after filters
etc to find restrictions in the system. If problem persists check needle and
seat in carb.
Guide to fuel useage at winton 50 laps was equivalent to full tank + 5
litres say 35Litres. Assuming average lap time 82sec then 50 x 82 =4100sec
then for minutes 68.3minutes of fuel. So for litres per min at winton 0.51
litres/min. I am expecting higher at other tracks where I will be on cam
(read higher revs) more.
If you want a look at what I've done then come down to sandown on the 29/30
of July.
Regards
Trev

Michael,
Ask Trevor Pooley about the difference fuel line sizes can make to
performance.

Subject: Fuel Line and Tank

Just put the SU's on the rally car and took it for a spin. Good
improvement. Then put ram tubes and better air filters on and
#$%$#$#%^#@%. Great improvment.
The one problem I have is that it is running out of fuel. I was going to
replace the fuel line and locate inside the transmission tunnel so that it
doesn't get ripped off by rocks and stuff. The question is does anybody
have recommendations of where I could get get this pipe made up?
The other questions is there is probably some crap in the tank preventing
full fuel flow Any advice on th4e best way/place to get these cleaned out?
Cheers
