Craig,
The W53 is usually closed but there are a few rare open heads that didn't
have the provision to have the L16 EFI manifold fitted. Hang on to that B
cam, they are great with 2xSU or single DCOE. It goes to show you that there
is nothing that is a certainty with a Nissan.
This is a write up on the W53 from a SSS head site that I have found to be
accurate.
Casting #: W53
Chamber type: closed (with some exceptions)
Description:
"This head is from the Japanese market. Some of these castings are for
factory fuel injected engines and have notches in the intake ports to
accommodate injectors. 1.25" (31.75mm) intake ports and square exhaust
ports. 1.65" (42mm) intake valves and 1.38" (35mm) exhaust valves."
regards
Terry

Terry,
I pulled a W53 off a Stanza PA10 '82 L16 model the other week. It had a
peanut chamber with small 31.5mm ports, 42mm & 35mm valve's. Had a B cam
in it. It showed absolutely no signs of head gasket problems or warpage.
Every other head I have pulled recently have all been worse, A87, V91,
V912, U67. It was the first W53 I pulled, I had always thought they were
open chamber so hadn't bothered. I wanted a small port peanut head so
that I could shape it how I want. I found that nearly all of the gasket
problems were head bolt torque related. Broken head bolts were also
quite common, sometimes from corrosion. 280ZX Turbo head bolts are
supposed to be harder and I'm going to use them.
Instead of just porting by guess work, I wrote myself a computer program
to calculate ideal camshaft lift/dur and port/manifold/carby size. It
requires that the head be flow tested to calculate the port/valve flow
coefficient. I'm working on a homemade flow tester and if its accurate I
may make it and a cutdown program freely available if there is interest.
Craig.
