Correct, minor machining of the disc to reduce the diameter to fit the calliper perfectly is sometimes required when non oem combinations are used. I have seen some calliper/rotor combinations that aren't perfect in respect of where on the disc the pads contact. If you look at oem combinations the pads contact very close to the hub so there is a bit of disc on the inner and outer extremities that is never worn; about 5mm inside and 10-15mm in the outside. I've seen this non contact area more the other way on conversions ie a slightly larger non contact area adjacent the hub. I don't think it's a problem though as long as the full face of the pads contacts the disc.

So they make up the extra radii on the rotor in the shape of the caliper as opposed to moving the caliper mounts?

Zac,
The calliper mounting point on many struts is very similar in relation to the axis of the stub axle. The vertical height of the calliper only has to be increased by the same as the rotor radius to accommodate a bigger rotor (d=2r) The 1600/180B strut has the same bolt spacing as the commy calliper, the later 180B 73 mm stub axle struts are preferred when used with the Magna rotors but it's not essential. The smaller 1600/180B stub axle is 68 mm and the original diameter of the centre hole of Magna rotors is 69 mm but this is easier to machine the centre hole out to 73 mm rather than to fill the 1mm difference.

regards,

Terry

List, how do VT brake calipers with bigger discs bolt to 180B struts? Wouldn't the brake mounting points be too low down because of the small original disc on the 180b?

Also, the VT calipers only bolt to 1600/180B struts?

Thanks,
zac
