I you have a multimeter, check the resistance between the terminals.  It should be 
about 6Meg Ohms.  If it is not really high like >1Meg Ohm, then it is likel the gauge 
has collapsed inside.  I had it happen to me
while I was driving, boy was there some smoke that day.
