I had a 1600 with L20B motor, fully balanced, twin square-top SU's with
halved spindles with cap-screws holding the butterflies, headers, intake
trumpets, 9.8:1 compression, Z intake valves, standard exhaust valves, 3
angle valve job, mild porting and matching(dowelled manifold), K & N filter
in original SSS housing, 2in exhaust, off-road rally cam(torque), 3.9:1
rear-end, 205/60-14 tyres, Z 5 speed.

Get this, 31 mpg average over 30,000 miles of commuting including at least 1
stoplight race every day, lots of top-end runs up to 110 mph, a significant
amount of heavy throttle use especially uphill using the torque and
over-taking, open-road cruising at 3,500-4,000 rpm in 5th (20.36 mph/1,000
in 5th R/Radius) plus quite a bit of light throttle cruising. My driving
style is best described as competitive. So that is 300-310 miles per tank.

This figure is derived from the log I kept, the odometer mileage was checked
on a 5km marker post test and adjusted accordingly(surprisingly this picked
up tyre wear, as in worn tyres indicated greater distance travelled than new
tyres because of the significant difference in the rolling radius).

The range was from 27 mpg when a tune-up was needed to 34 mpg on a real easy
run. Given the same state of tune the average only fluctuated from 29-33 mpg
and did not change much whether driven hard or gently. I guess that
demonstrates an efficient motor with lots of torque, and not
over-carbureted. Best measured quarter mile time 16.3 @ 81 mph before some
of the mods. It would have done 15.8 @ 86mph at absolute best but I never
went to the strip subsequently when it was running much harder.

I recommend Datsun SU's for sheer ease of tuning, cost of purchase, ease of
installation, driveability, torque and economy. Compared to Webers the only
positive benefit you miss out on is a few horsepower at the top-end, but in
return you get all of the aforementioned benefits.
