I ended up checking out my mates pulsar for him
he explained it all to me again in person I just said "sounds like your timing chain has snapped or come off"
he tried to turn it over and I said "yup timing chain dude, you're gunna have one hell of a mess in there"
then just to confuse the issue even further he says "but I kicked it over about an hour ago and it started and idled"

that put an end to that theory straight away
off with the timing cover only to discover ...... the timing chain wasn't on

but my mate continues to swear black and blue that he had it running only an hour before

my only theory is the timing chain jumped a tooth or two which did the original damamge, then when he kicked it over that day the timing chain has completely jumped off

In the end I just said to him "no matter what did actually happen, you've run your engine with the timing chain off so no matter what it was it's screwed now"
So off came the K&N air pod, mags, stickers, custom gear shifter etc etc and we packed it off to nissan for a warranty claim  (fingers crossed)

thanks to everyone who made their sugestions what they thought it might be, it cut out a few of my theories and gave me less to have to check :)

Subject: engine go bang bang

just a quick question not datto related but it's a nissan so I thought someone may know

my mate has an 1999 N15 Pulsar and has asked me to go to his place tomorrow afternoon and take a look at it for him.
just thought I'd check with the people in the know and see if they have any ideas as to what I should be searching for.

I only ask because the description he gave me on the phone sounds like 4 problems all in one all happened at the same time so I thought I'd get some opinions

This is the way he explained it to me.......

"I was driving down the freeway at around 95-100 km/h when I heard a fairly loud BANG.  At the same time every light in the dashboard came on and went off then the engine just cut out.  I rolled over to the side of the freeway and got out and popped the bonnet, only to discover my engine was a raging inferno.  Someone driving past pulled over and had a fire extinguisher in their car and helped me put it out.  I got the car towed home.  I can crank it over but there is a very loud clunking noise."

It's got me confused, the dash board sounds like a wiring problem.  At first I thought the bang and the fire were related, but once he told me about the clunking noise I figure the bang was something letting go internally. The clunking he described definately sounds bottom end, perhaps whatever it was that made the bang has found it's way into the crankcase?  Then there's the fire, my guess a fuel leak somewhere, possibly ignited by a short which would have also explained the dash, well at least I'd like to think it's that, because if it was simply ignited by the engine heat then that again leaves me pondering the dash lights.  Now I'm left trying to work out why the hell this all happened at once.

Any thoughts would be greatly appretiated.

Thanks guys'n'gals
Dave
