Thanks for the replies but he now informs me it is going again. A call to
his uncle turned in the possibility that the fuse for the anti pollution in
top gear switch and circuitry had blown and sure enough. Apparently it's
called the ignition control circuit. Not what you'd call a reliable fail
safe design. It seems that it fails into the state where the ignition system
runs for top gear!
